BIAB Nails: What They Are, How They Work, and Why Everyone's Getting Them

What Are BIAB Nails?

BIAB stands for Builder in a Bottle — a hybrid nail product that combines the strength of a hard gel with the ease of a gel polish application. Unlike gel polish, BIAB is thick enough to add real structure and length to the natural nail, making it the go-to for anyone who wants stronger nails without the bulk of acrylics.

BIAB is applied like gel polish in a brush-in-bottle format, cured under a UV or LED lamp, and removed by soaking in acetone — just like regular gel. The difference is the product's viscosity and structural strength.

BIAB vs. Acrylic vs. Gel Polish: What's the Difference?

What Does BIAB Do to Your Natural Nails?

BIAB acts as a protective overlay on the natural nail. Instead of needing a separate tip or extension, it builds directly on your existing nail plate to add hardness and prevent breakage. It's especially popular with clients whose nails peel, break or stay thin no matter how they're cared for at home.

With correct prep and regular infills, BIAB can actually improve the condition of the natural nail underneath by preventing mechanical damage over time.

How Is BIAB Applied?

  1. Prep — cuticles pushed back, the nail surface lightly filed to remove shine, dehydrator and primer applied.
  2. Base coat — a thin layer of BIAB is painted on and cured under the lamp for 30–60 seconds.
  3. Build layers — one or two thicker coats are applied and cured, creating the structural layer, with a small bead at the apex of each nail for strength at the highest-stress point.
  4. Shape and file — once cured, the nail is shaped and rough edges refined.
  5. Colour and top coat — regular gel polish colour goes over the BIAB base, finished with a gel top coat and cured.

How Long Do BIAB Nails Last?

BIAB nails typically last 3–4 weeks between infills — comparable to hard gel and longer than most gel polish applications. With good prep and aftercare, nails can go 4–5 weeks, though most clients book a 3-week infill to keep things neat.

Unlike acrylics, BIAB can be infilled or soaked off cleanly without the heavy filing hard gel removal requires.

How Are BIAB Nails Removed?

BIAB is soak-off formulated, so it breaks down in acetone. Most technicians use the foil-wrap method: acetone-soaked cotton on each nail, wrapped in foil, left for 15–20 minutes. The BIAB slides off cleanly. Never peel BIAB — it takes layers of the natural nail with it.

How Much Do BIAB Nails Cost?

In Australian salons, a full BIAB set with colour costs $70–$130. Infills (filling in only the grown-out section) cost $50–$90. Prices vary by location and whether nail art is included.

Turn BIAB Into a Business

BIAB is one of the highest-demand services in Australian salons right now — clients pay a premium for the natural look and nail-health benefits, and it's faster to master than sculpted acrylic work. Bela Beauty College's Nail Technology Course covers BIAB, prep and soak-off removal alongside every other system clients ask for, with a kit shipped to you and tutor support the whole way — so you can start booking BIAB clients as soon as you're trained.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does BIAB stand for?

BIAB stands for Builder in a Bottle. It refers to the delivery format — a structured builder gel pre-loaded in a polish bottle with a brush, rather than a pot requiring a separate brush.

Is BIAB the same as gel nails?

No. BIAB is a type of builder gel, significantly thicker and more structural than standard gel polish, which adds colour and shine but no real strength. BIAB adds a hard structural layer over the natural nail before colour goes on.

Can BIAB be used to extend nails?

BIAB can add a small amount of length — typically 1–3mm — but it's primarily an overlay product, not an extension product. For significant length, a nail form or tip is used with a different builder gel or acrylic.

Is BIAB safe for thin or damaged nails?

Yes, when applied by a trained technician with correct prep. BIAB protects the natural nail from mechanical damage, and clients with thin or peeling nails often see improvement after consistent BIAB treatments.

Do BIAB nails look natural?

Yes. Because BIAB is applied in thin layers directly over the natural nail, the finished result looks thinner and more natural than acrylics. Under a sheer or nude gel polish, BIAB nails are hard to distinguish from natural nails.

How is BIAB different from hard gel?

Both are builder gels, but hard gel must be filed off, not soaked in acetone. BIAB is specifically engineered to be soak-off, making removal faster and less damaging to the nail plate.
